In Loving Memory of Dr. José Luís Calderón, M.D.

PHYSICIAN | RESEARCHER | SCIENTIST | COMMUNITY HEALTH ACTIVIST

Honoring The Legacy He Leaves Behind

Dr. José Luís Calderón, M.D., was born on May 14, 1955, in the South Bronx, New York, to Eustacia and Rafael. The third of six children, he grew up surrounded by the love and energy of his siblings—Ralph, Juanita, Raymond, Betty, and Jorge—who now carry his memory forward. Known to family and friends as Joe, he passed away on November 16, 2023, leaving behind a life story that continues to resonate deeply with everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Dr. Calderón’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Growing up in challenging neighborhoods, he poured himself into academics and music, becoming an NY All-City Violinist while attending John Dewey High School. His dedication earned him a New York State Regents Scholarship, allowing him to pursue pre-medical studies at UAlbany, NY. From there, he went on to achieve one of the highest honors in medicine, graduating from Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Calderón’s impact was felt across every corner of his life, leaving a lasting impression on his family, friends, and those he guided along the way.

As a physician, researcher, and mentor, he devoted himself to improving the lives of others. Through his guidance and encouragement, he helped countless individuals unlock their potential and reach new heights.

Joe’s family meant everything to him. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Joe was a talented musician, a soulful author, and a passionate golfer. He had a zest for life that was infectious, a smile that lit up every room, and a heart filled with generosity and love for all.

Joe’s bright energy, uplifting stories, and unshakable vision for making the world a better place will forever remain in our hearts. His legacy inspires us to continue his work and honor the values he held dear.

Through the ongoing efforts of the Swanson Calderon Foundation and the many lives he influenced, Joe’s memory lives on, inspiring others to dream boldly and create change in their own way.
