Dr. Jose Luis Calderon’s journey was defined by a relentless commitment to helping others. After earning his medical degree from Harvard, Dr. Calderon could have chosen any path—but he followed his heart to the community hospitals of Brooklyn at the height of the AIDS crisis.
“Before I left, I made my first choice clear—to return to an inner-city county hospital in Brooklyn. A place considered deeply unsafe. A place of extreme poverty. At the heart of the AIDS epidemic. We were the epicenter in Brooklyn.
Before I left, the dean of students—who I won’t name (but if you ever see this, you’ll know who you are)—approached me. He told me I was wasting a Harvard education by going back to Brooklyn, to a place like Kings County.
