Welcome to the Swanson Calderon Foundation
“Our mission is simple but urgent: ensure that no one is left without mental-health support, regardless of circumstance. By advancing world-class, affordable, and accessible digital care, we are building a future where help is not a privilege, but a right.” – Clark Swanson, Founder & CEO
The Swanson Calderon Foundation was created by American entrepreneur and philanthropist Clark Swanson to honor the extraordinary life and legacy of Dr. Jose Luis Calderon, M.D. — a Harvard-educated physician, cancer researcher, and wellness innovator whose life’s work was grounded in healing, hope, and human dignity.
As a doctor, scientist, and survivor of domestic trauma, Dr. Calderon dedicated himself to advancing healthcare access for the underserved and advocating for vulnerable communities. His research, medical care, and personal resilience continue to inspire a mission that lives on through this foundation.
“Joe’s death was more than a personal tragedy — it was a wake-up call. Millions struggle in silence because support is too expensive, too distant, or too stigmatized to reach. The Swanson Calderon Foundation was created to honor Joe’s life by transforming loss into action and action into access.
“Our mission is simple but urgent: ensure that no one is left without mental-health support, regardless of circumstance. By advancing world-class, affordable, and accessible digital care, we are building a future where help is not a privilege, but a right.” – Clark Swanson, Founder & CEO
From Harvard to the Heart of the Community
A Doctor for the People: The Story of Dr. Jose Luis Calderon, M.D.
Dr. Jose Luis Calderon’s journey was defined by an unshakable commitment to service and a belief that compassion belongs in every corner of medicine.
After graduating from Harvard Medical School with a concentration in critical care, Dr. Calderón made a decision that defied the traditional path expected of a Harvard-trained physician. He chose to complete his post-graduate medical training in Family Medicine at Kings County Hospital / SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Central Brooklyn—the very community where he was raised.
At the time, Central Brooklyn had one of the highest infant mortality rates in the country, exceeding that of many developing nations. It was also the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS crisis. Despite strong advice from the Dean of Students to pursue a more prestigious residency program, Dr. Calderón stood firm in his conviction.
“The poor deserve Harvard-educated doctors too. Why not?”

His decision was met with skepticism and even criticism, but it became a defining act of purpose that shaped his life and legacy. Dr. Calderón believed that the measure of a doctor was not found in titles or affiliations, but in where and how they chose to serve.
His story is featured in the forthcoming documentary Truth, a film that chronicles his remarkable life and mission to bring world-class care to the most underserved populations in America.
